Their homes may be separated by an ocean, but on the evening of 11th Oct, East Malaysian and the residents of DU and DJ partied like a family. The #WindowtoBorneo Family Day brought Sabah and Sarawak into the DU multipurpose hall at SS21/12, where a huge crowd flocked to the stalls selling laksa Sarawak, layer cake, ayam pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo), traditional clothing and fabric, accessories, and many more.

Besides the yummy offerings, the family day showcased traditional dances of Borneo, as well as demonstrations on how to make tuak (East Malaysian rice wine) and ayam pansuh. Members of the audience also enthusiastically joined in the challenging magunatip dance, while two ladies went on stage to put their sumpit skills to the test. All in all, it was an evening of laughter and chatter among Malaysians of all ethnicities, age and background.

The success of the Window to Borneo DU Family Day is thanks to the organisers Persatuan Warisan Sarawak Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, Spirits of the Harvest, Borneo Hornbill Festival, Borneo Heritage and Kurami Entertainment, with the support of the Councillor for Zone 5 (SS21, SS22 and SS22A), Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya. Starting in Damansara Utama, the organisers plan to kick off similar events in a series of family day road shows across Selangor to bridge the gap between communities in Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia.
